What Are Custom Orthotics?
Understanding how custom orthotics are far superior to any orthotics you buy off the shelf at the store is essential. Off-the-shelf shoe inserts can’t relieve the variety of symptoms that custom-made orthotics can. Custom orthotics can fully address foot issues specific to you using state-of-the-art technology that maps your feet for structural irregularities, such as high or low arches.
Your body’s instabilities and gait problems, which structural issues in your feet can cause, can lead to ankle, knee, hip, and even lower back pain. Your feet are the foundation for your body, carrying you everywhere you need to go in life, so it makes sense to start from the ground up to help alleviate the pain you have in the rest of your body.
Custom Orthotics Can Change Your Life!
Your feet may not be the first area that comes to mind when trying to get to the root cause of your back and joint pain, but it’s worth investigating as part of the problem. When you have structural abnormalities in your feet, it forces your feet to be out of alignment. This creates a domino effect of improper alignment, which travels from your ankles to your knees, through your hips, and to your spine, creating possible pain points throughout your body.
Using custom orthotics allows you to realign your body’s foundation and create a more balanced skeletal structure. Foot orthotics can help positively affect upward by changing your body mechanics and helping your feet absorb more impact when you walk, run, or stand. This added shock absorption can reduce pain in your back, ankles, knees, and hips, significantly improving your life quality.

How do they work?
Custom orthotics fit inside most shoes. Designed to match the shape of your feet.
Orthotics can help anyone with pain related to walking or imbalances in the body. A huge benefit of custom orthotics is that they can be worn daily during most activities.
Who can help?
Your DPM can prescribe custom orthotics, MD, DO, or chiropractor and can last well over a year in most cases. Over-the-counter shoe inserts are available at most drugstores, and they lack the custom-built precision of a prescription orthotic and can cause more issues than you already have. This ‘one size fits all’ inserts rarely match your feet or provide the custom support you need.
Contact us and schedule an appointment to discuss how custom orthotics might ease your pain. Some insurances cover foot orthoses (orthotics) and require a referral and office visit notes from your provider to submit to your insurance company for benefits.

Foot orthoses are used to treat several conditions such as:
Achilles Tendon Disorder
The Achilles tendon is a powerful tissue and the largest tendon in the body which connects the muscles of the calf to the heel. The Achilles tendon is responsible for creating force to push off the foot and lifting the foot to clear the ground when walking. It’s common in runners and people who play sports only on the weekends. Sharp heel pain and tenderness are key symptoms
Diabetes Complications
Patients with diabetes are likely to face dangerous foot problems. Neuropathy and poor blood flow likely lead to unrecognized pain, injuries, and ulcers that progressively develop into worse conditions. Poor circulation causes those injuries do not heal. Neuropathy is nerve damage that usually results in numbness. This makes it likely for even a tiny cut, blister, or foot infection to develop into a much worse condition that can lead to amputation or even the loss of life if entirely ignored.
Flat Foot
Flat feet can occur during childhood if the arches of the feet don’t develop, after an injury, or from the wear and tear of aging.
Adult Acquired Flatfoot: This cause of flatfoot is due to the dysfunction of the posterior tibial tendon. Go to that pathology section to review this form of flatfoot.
Flexible Flatfoot: This flatfoot originates in childhood due to the skipped development of the medial longitudinal arch past age 5. This condition is usually bilateral, and the foot arch returns to normal when not weight-bearing. For example, 20% of adults have flexible flatfoot, while the situation goes undetected.
Plantar Fascitis
Felt at the bottom of the heel it’s a common overuse injury. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the foot arch has pain and swelling. It’s common for patients with plantar fasciitis also to have heel spurs. Issues with the plantar fascia usually revolve around poor biomechanics. Symptoms include sharp pain near the heel. Pain might be worst in the morning.
Shin Splints
Are a broad term to describe the sharp pain in the tibia’s outer aspect or shins. Shin splints are usually the result of repetitive stress on the bone due to excessive physical activity with little rest and poor biomechanics. Untreated and unresolved shin splints can result in stress breaking. The main symptom is leg pain.
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (TTS)
The tarsal tunnel is a space inside the outer aspect of the ankle near the bones. Flexor retinaculum is a thick ligament that protects the tunnel. Arteries, veins, tendons, and nerves run through this tunnel. The posterior tibial nerve runs through this tunnel and is the focus of tarsal tunnel syndrome. TTS requires a medical diagnosis. Symptoms may include burning sharp pain at the sole of the foot that’s worse when standing or during activity. Other symptoms include numbness or tingling at the base of the foot.
The compression of this tunnel can cause the nerve to be pinched. Reduction of the tunnel can be caused by repetitive wear, flat feet, abnormal structures, injuries, arthritis, diabetes, and other conditions. If not treated, the disease can continue to get worse.
